Have you ever been browsing Twitter (or the millions of other social media platforms out there), or reading blog posts, and stopped to look at the time just to find that 3 hours have passed?
Over the last few days, I’ve found myself completely LOST.
I meant to write up some blog posts.
I meant to read books.
I meant to make progress on my story for Camp NaNoWriMo.
But all those meant’s mean nothing when it comes down to it. After you’ve spent hours upon helpless hours swirling around in the new-age world known as “social media”.
Social media is like a never-ending black hole.
You click one thing. Read it. Click something else. Read it. Which makes you want to click the next one. And before you know it, you’re spiraling down and down and down into this never-ending black hole, time passing without you even realizing it.
I have literally spent my entire weekend reading blog posts and tweets.
Don’t look at me like that. I’m not kidding here.
I honestly feel quite ashamed of myself. At first, I was like, “Oh, heck yeah, go me! I’m killing it in the blog-hopping game!” Then, all of a sudden it’s Sunday, and I’m like, “What in the bleep? HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? WHERE DID MY WEEKEND GO? I was supposed to be reading actual books!!”
Seriously.
Someone reassure me I’m not the only one this happens to.
What I want to know, is this…
If this happens to you, how do you PREVENT it from happening?
Do you turn off all your devices? Or mute notifications? Maybe you schedule specific times for reading actual books, blogging, blog-hopping, tweeting, etc?
I feel like I need to do one of two things:
- Flush all my devices down the toilet or;
- Manage my time more properly (by scheduling time for certain things like reading books, blogging, etc)
Since I don’t really want to destroy my electronic devices, I feel like going with number two would be the most logical and rational answer. But, I could use your help!
Let me know how you feel about this never-ending black hole we call “social media”. Have you ever let several hours pass you completely unnoticed?
If you can relate, please tell me what you do to try to prevent that from happening! It’s so easy to fall into the black hole!!
Until next time…
As someone who has actually flushed their phone down the toilet haha I would say going with option #2 is probably for the best.
As to how to keep from getting lost in a blackhole… I have no clue lol. I still haven’t figured that one out for myself.

Haha! How did that happen? Did you flush it by accident or did you just get so aggravated with it that you decided to be rid of it? 😋

Lmao it was an accident! It fell out of my back pocket and I didn’t realize it had fallen in until after I had flushed smh. It was gone in the blink of an eye lol. And it was a bit of a hassle getting a new phone. So I do not recommend it lol.

OMG! I’m always so scared of that happening to me!!😬

I usually don’t get lost in the black hole for too long, but my body goes through little energy spikes so I kind of go with the flow. If I want to write a few blog post or sit on Twitter for an hour, I’ll do it right then😂😂 it’s a little weird 😂

Lucky! I have serious time management issues. I didn’t think it was this bad though until this weekend 😅

I can totally relate as I have on more than one occasion fallen into the social media black usually when I’m trying to avoid doing the things I’m supposed to be doing 💜

Haha😅 I wish it ONLY happened to me when I was intentionally trying to avoid doing other things lol. But dang it… I really wanted to finish my books this weekend!!😆

I set an alarm on my phone for 1/2 hour. I always think it’s a long time and am always shocked how fast it goes off.

That’s a really good idea! I’m going to try that today. Set my alarm and allow myself the joy of browsing for only 30 mins and make myself stop when the timer goes off! But yeah, it’s insane how fast the time goes by without even realizing it. Thanks for the suggestion, though! I’ll let you know how it goes!😋

omg this happens to me ALL THE TIME. The internet is a wonderful thing, but it’s also a curse when you actually need to get stuff done. If I’m really determined to get some reading done, I’ll go sit in the living room, away from my computer, and sometimes I’ll even leave my phone in another room or at least out of reach. Otherwise I’ll end up scrolling through WordPress on my phone for eeeever lol.

Yes! I’m glad I’m not the only one who gets sucked into the black hole for hours and hours!😅 That sounds like a good idea… going in the other room and leaving my phone etc elsewhere. I’m gonna give that a try! Thanks for the suggestion!

Hope it works! Sometimes it does, sometimes you just sit there thinking “what’s going on on the internet while I’m not on it????”

Haha!🤣 I could totally see myself doing that

I find Twitter is almost more addictive the more time I spend on it. It can feel annoyingly like if you leave Twitter for one day you “miss” everything. But I’ve gone, say, a week without looking at Twitter because I was on vacation on something, and it was fine. Maybe I did never see the drama of the week…but I also didn’t even KNOW I missed it because people move on so quickly. It didn’t matter. Realizing that make me able to spend less time on Twitter in general, especially because my own audience is more on my blog than on Twitter. If someone has 5000 Twitter followers, I could see how devoting more time there would make sense.

Absolutely! I haven’t been on Twitter long, but I feel the same. I feel that way about WordPress, too. Like if I miss one day (or even 12 hours) I’ve missed everything! And that’s a really great point! Thanks for sharing, Briana!😋

Couldn’t agree more! I REALLY need to stay away from twitter in April… Camp NaNo! Great post!

Yes! Another Camper who has fallen into the abyss! April is going to be a very important month for me, so I really need to get my crap together so I can really FOCUS on my writing for Camp! Aka turn off all notifications, force myself to stay away from social media.😅 Good luck with Camp NaNo!! I hope you reach your goal!

I feel you! When you find out how to do it please let me know! 😄 I haven’t read a single page the whole weekend 😦 I did write 4 posts and that took me forever! If anyone has a tip on how to write posts more quickly I’d welcome the advice 😄 I wanted to start my blog on twitter too, but I guess that’s a bad idea haha

Four posts is so much more progress than what I’ve accomplished (which is basically nothing except this post)🤣 And it’s funny you mention that because I was trying to find you on Twitter this weekend so I could shout you out in my Saturday Shoutout… but I couldn’t find you! Now I know why lol 😋

AH love this I totally feel you on that. I think the only motivation I have to get off is that I really need to go and do other things haha

Thanks! Yeah, my motivation to get off lately has been the fact that I can’t keep my eyes open any longer. Haha! But not for the last couple days… I’ve steered clear of Twitter!

i deleted my facebook so it’s been a bit more manageable but i catch myself doing this with twitter a lot! i always just check the time when i first log onto a social media site and that way i know exactly how much time i’m spending. it holds me accountable lmao

I’ve considered opening a FB page for my blog, but now I’m just like NO. NO. no no no. haha. And I’m going to start setting alarms to limit my time spent on Twitter 😉

I definitely feel that way whenever I go on Twitter (and Reddit, but not so much). I open the app, then the next time I look up, it’s already past midnight and I’ve just wasted so much time! So now I just… don’t open social media LOL. I only have notifications activated for Twitter so I can reply, then quickly get off the app before I cause more damage!

Right after I posted this, I did the same thing. I pretty much did not open any social media apps! And even though I feel like I missed a lot in the last few days, it was a nice breather. I’ve considered opening accounts on other social media platforms, but at this point, I’m just like… NO. I’m not doing it. Not right now. Haha!

Oh god, I can 100% relate. For me, the worst part is that I do a little bit of freelance social media managing, so sometimes I lie to myself and called the black hole ‘work’.
It isn’t.
